The agriculture industry produces many different types of biomass waste, from animal manure to plant material. All these wastes can be remediated with the APS technology to ensure no harmful pollutants like nitrous oxide enter the atmosphere.

Challenge

Although manure provides many benefits as fertilizer, it is also a source of pollution with impacts on the environment and human health. In fact, industrial agriculture is one of the leading causes of water pollution in the United States according to the Environmental Protection Agency. When raw manure enters the environment it is capable of killing wildlife and even sickening and killing people as raw manure is up to 160 times more toxic than raw municipal sewage. With industrial farming on the rise, the amount of manure produced in Canada has been rising steadily, with millions of tonnes of manure being produced in Canada alone that is being spread out over the land.



Solution

Although some manure types have a high water content, dried manure is an excellent feedstock for the APS technology. Instead of spreading manure over the land, using the APS technology manure can be broken down into useable products.

Processing of manure produces light fuel oil as a by-product, with smaller amounts of carbon produced:

  • • Fuel Oil: ~70% - depending on the flash point
  • • Biochar: ~10%
  • • Syngas: 15-18% - much of which is used to power the APS system
